Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words – 11 Instances of Dead Letters + Words

May 31, 2007

 2265043.jpg

To me, one of the most challenging albums from recent years, really intriguing.

From kalligrammofon:
Like a young Werther with a mohawk haircut and worn out nail polish Thomas Ekelund has been formulating his musical letters with machines and concrete sources of sound for some years now. Under the moniker of Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words he has released mp3 releases, ep’s and albums influenced by, or carrying traces of melancholic pop music, 60’s girl groups, music concrete and the pale harshness of early industrial music.

Lindstrom – Let’s Practise 12”

i have a soft spot for giorgio moroder productions, specially the one from his 70’s prime time.

i really like lindstrom work, the music collected on “a feedelity affair” is awesome. Space-disco, or anyway you call it, can’t get better.

so, lindstrom goes all moroder, the best for him, killer track, the vocals are not donna summer great, but very good, and the song vibe, oh boy, go and check it!

yuichiro fujimoto – the mountain record

May 30, 2007

From Boomkat:

Much as with other recent Ahornfelder releases, Yuichiro Fujimoto’s The Mountain Record is about immense beauty on a small scale. After recently putting out excellent works by Daisuke Miyatani and Wechsel Garland (under his 17 Pictures guise), the label continue to release beautiful sound miniatures bringing delicate acoustic instrumentation together with an understated use of field recording ambience. ‘Listen To November Steps’ draws on bristling environmental sounds, Fujimoto’s lightly plucked acoustic guitar and the apparently incidental, nonchalant humming of a friend caught on tape. This kind of intimate abstraction is precisely what makes this album sound so precious, with following pieces such as ‘Open Window (For Piano)’ capturing a simple, childlike piano performance set against the low-key bustle of birdsong and distant voices. After a series of tracks exploring different combinations of acoustic instruments and found sounds, Fujimoto virtually dispenses with instrumentation altogether for the sonic landscape painting that is ‘Birds, Cows, Dogs and Bells’. It’s only for the piece’s coda that the artist’s hand is revealed, a few chimes ringing out the final moments of the recording. Utterly lovely stuff from start to finish, Fujimoto lets the listener in on a very hushed, private sound world, which despite its quietness leaves makes a hefty impact.

Soundboy Punishments (SKULL)

May 28, 2007

skullcd001a.jpg

For those who like dubstep, great great collection of releases from the Skull Disco label. Kinda ghost dubstep, not as dark as burial but more melodic(!), with some african and orient sounds invading the mix on the Shacketon cuts. Two albuns with a great remix from Ricardo Villalobos.

truly alien and amazing.

The Album is splited in two parts, you’ll need HJSPLIT to join. Get part 01 and 02. Don’t rename the files before joining.

Good listen, try with good speakers! Bass Attack!!!

opsvik & jennings – commuter anthems

I’m pretty sure that’s something weird happening in Norway – those sounds!

The Rune Grammofon lab is really working this year, new releases by Alog, MoHa!, Arve Henriksen, In The Country and upcoming from Supersilent – they get no wrong.

This album from opsvik & jennings is their second, first for Rune. Rich layering of acoustic instruments and sound manipulation. The sound recalls a jazz band as much as some folk or country song filtered through computers.

The perfect album for the Sunday morning, all laid-back and sweet – really good with your breakfast tea. Digital Rural music, if you want.

Listen!

Pjusk – Sart

May 27, 2007

1042minibig.jpgThe best 12k release in a while, this debut from Pjusk blends field recordings, electronic manipulation and acoustic instrumentation. But not like many of contemporary electronic artists that uses this same aesthetic, to results that go from tedious to boredom, Pjusk creates a dense atmosphere of beauty and originality.

It becames the daylight counterpart to Deaf Center darkness(honestly, what’s happening in Norway? Is it something they drink, eat or breath? It should be investigated!).

I read comparisons with Biosphere – can’t agree at all. The pioneers never had this warmth or texture level. It would be more correct to say that a part of Pjusk sounds recalls Biosphere, as much as Senking, 12k’s Shuttle 358 and aforementioned Death Center.

Is no coincidence that two reviews for this album used the word sublime. SUBLIME.

Get it fast.

Blues Control – Puff

May 27, 2007

I was wondering how to describe their sound, I searched what other people said to see if they had the same reaction I had, but all I could get was a bunch of mesmerized folks trying to put on paper their reactions. Like here and here.
I’m not an entusiast of psychedelic music, but you won’t listen much better experimental sounds this year.

Get Puff.

Foxy Digitalis

May 26, 2007

The guys at Foxy Digitalis really knows the score, my latest favorite found there: Riftmusic

To try to describe the sound, I can’t to better than the “solar drone” the reviewer call it.

If anyone has more from Richard Skelton, the guy behind the music, I’ll be really thankfull.
